Over the past decade researchers have identified intervention strategies and program models that reduce delinquency and promote pro-social development. Prevention & Early Intervention Typically, juvenile delinquency follows a trajectory similar to that of normal adolescent development. In other words, children and youth tend to follow a path toward delinquent and criminal behavior rather than engaging randomly.

1 Research has shown that there are two types of delinquents. Through comprehensive and coordinated efforts at the federal, state, and local levels, OJP’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) aims to reduce youth crime and violence.

OJJDP supports prevention and early intervention programs that are making a difference for young people and their communities, and through research and programming works to strengthen the nation's. graduation. Other truancy reduction programs are school-based and work to reverse patterns of truancy before high school; these programs are predominantly used in middle schools.

Cost Benefit of Prevention Policymakers must consider the cost, as well as the effectiveness, of prevention and intervention programs to address juvenile crime.

Two programs that have both of these features – early intervention and comprehensiveness - are home visitation programs and Head Start. Both of these programs have shown incredible results by targeting specific risk factors that lead to delinquent behavior. Once these risk factors are lessened, the problem behavior is much less likely to.

Numerous intervention programs exist which are aimed at addressing juvenile delinquency. While most of these programs focus on the youth(s) engaging in delinquent behavior, few intervention programs are aimed at parenting issues that may have contributed to delinquent behavior displayed by youth.

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) encourages the use of evidence-based programs and practices. Evidence-based programs and practices generally have one or more rigorous outcome evaluations that demonstrated effectiveness by measuring the relationship between the program and its intended outcome (s).

This includes measuring the direction and size of a change in. The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention’s (OJJDP’s) Model Programs Guide (MPG) contains information about evidence-based juvenile justice and youth prevention, intervention, and reentry programs. It is a resource for practitioners and communities about what works, what is promising, and what does not work in juvenile.

Prevention and Intervention Programs for Juvenile Offenders VOL. 18 / NO. 2 / FALL Determining What Works Measuring the effects of delinquency- prevention programs is challenging because the behavior the programs attempt to change is often covert and the full benefits extend over long periods of time.

In this section, I review. serious juvenile offenders who re-ceived treatment interventions. The Bulletin describes the intervention programs that showed the strongest, most consistent impact on recidivism for serious juvenile offenders.

The most effective interventions were interper-sonal skills Cited by: intervention programs and approaches that work to prevent the development of delinquent behavior by focusing on risk and protective factors.

Compared with juveniles who start offending in adolescence, child delin-quents (age 12 and younger) are two to three times more likely to become tomorrow’s serious and violent offend-ers. Shootings and deaths in schools throughout the United States have left parents believing that their communities are no longer safe from the most extreme examples of youth violence (Gallup, ).

This perception, combined with the increased lethality of youth violence in the early s, has lent urgency to the search for effective violence prevention efforts. Introduction. The Juvenile Intervention Assessment (JIA) assesses major risk factors associated with delinquency and acting out behavior.

JIA results are helpful in case planning, supervision, referral and, as warranted, counseling or treatment. The Juvenile Intervention Assessment (JIA) is an intake or screening instrument or test for troubled youth.

It is a concise, comprehensive, and. Juvenile diversion is an intervention strategy that redirects youths away from formal processing in the juvenile justice system, while still holding them accountable for their actions. Diversion programs may vary from low-intensity warn-and-release programs to more-intensive treatment or therapeutic programming, all in lieu of formal court.

A significant challenge facing the juvenile justice system is the task of transitioning and reintegrating juveniles from youth corrections facilities back into the community.

This challenge, in part, is related to determining whether the referred community programs are effective. This article summarizes the literature on the effectiveness of community programs for juveniles involved in the Cited by: 9.

Juvenile Sex Offender Group. The Juvenile Sex Offender Group is a community based out-patient program that treats juveniles dealing with sex offender issues. The program has 4 units that participants progress through sequentially, and must master the clinical issues within each.

The work illustrates methods of fire scene investigation and assessment relating to child-parent and family factors. This information is then used to prescribe interventions with the individual along with community-wide programs.

The work also provides current information on fire safety education and curricula, with explicit training materials. The best prevention and intervention programs have all of the following characteristics, EXCEPT: Punitive and harsh punishments Family based programs Institutional settings practice cognitive-behavioral therapy Recognize that long-term incarceration yields little benefit.

In the final section, authors explore current treatment programs and policy initiatives designed to mitigate and/or prevent juvenile delinquency. Key topics covered include: Juvenile Delinquency, Explanations of Delinquency, Correlates and Contexts of Delinquency; and all aspects of Juvenile Justice and Juvenile Justice Policy.

Youth Intervention Program (YIP) The YIP (Youth Intervention Program) is a unique program designed to target youth involved in gangs or at the greatest risk of being involved or recruited by gangs. The program has three components: Recruitment, Enrichment and Empowerment phases.

The beauty of the juvenile justice system is that it can be applied and modified to deal with the needs of the particular juvenile. That's what the system is all about. And these kids ought to. Despite compelling evidence that increased literacy skills promote prosocial outcomes, education programs in many juvenile correctional facilities are inadequate.

Appropriate educational services in juvenile corrections may not be a priority when the school program and security functions have to compete for limited resources.

Evidence shows that juvenile probation doesn’t work to reverse delinquent behavior. At its best, probation offers court-involved youth who would otherwise be confined the chance to remain in the community and participate in constructive and therapeutic activities.Prevention and Intervention Programs for Juvenile Delinquency 11 A.
